The Story of Naupaka: The Naupaka flower which resembles a half-flower, has two varieties, one that grows near the ocean and the other in the mountain. Each flower bears what appears to be a half-flower and when placed together, they form a perfect whole flower. The Naupaka Flower tells a story of two young lovers, a princess from the mountain who falls in love with a commoner from the sea, each half-flower representing the lovers who were forbidden to be together because of their social class. It is said that the lovers are reunited when the Naupaka Flower near the ocean (makai) is joined together with Naupaka flower in the mountain (mauka), creating a whole flower symbolic of everlasting love.
